Understanding and Utilizing Capture One's Color Editor

Capture One's Color Editor is a powerful tool that enables precise color grading adjustments. It allows you to selectively control and modify individual colors or color ranges within your image. To access the Color Editor, click on the Color tab in Capture One's interface. There, you'll find Basic, Advanced, and Skin Tone color grading/editing controls.

  • The Basic tab allows one set of adjustments per color range (red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, yellow, orange, and pink).

  • The Advanced tab provides a much more specialized tool, permitting up to 30 individual colors to be corrected per image. It also offers more control over the Lightness of each color.

  • The Skin Tone tab offers more tools to even out or homogenize color. It is useful for correcting unwanted color variation, particularly when images have had strong global contrast and high saturation adjustments applied, or when simply correcting patchy skin tones or uneven application of makeup.

Adjusting Colors with the Color Balance Tool

The Color Balance tool in Capture One is an excellent starting point for modifying the overall color balance of your image. Use the three-way color wheels to control the shadows, mid-tones, and highlights. This provides a great foundation for establishing the desired mood or style. Experiment with various adjustments until you achieve the desired effect.

* PRO TIP: to ensure clean highlights when color grading, try utilizing the Exposure Warning tool found in Capture One’s top navigation.

Fine-tuning Colors with the Color Editor

Capture One's Color Editor provides precise control over specific colors or color ranges. Use the color picker tool from the toolbar to select the color you want to modify within the image. Once selected, different sliders and controls will become available to adjust hue, saturation, and luminosity of the chosen color. Experiment with these adjustments to achieve the desired look.

Applying Styles and Presets

Capture One offers a wide range of pre-defined Styles and Presets designed by professional photographers and editors. These can serve as starting points for your color grading process or provide inspiration. Styles and presets offer the advantage of consistency throughout your images or allow you to achieve specific looks quickly. Explore the library of styles and presets to find the ones that align with your vision.

Local Adjustments for Precise Color Grading

In Capture One, you can refine your color grading further using local adjustments. By using adjustment layers or masks, you can selectively edit specific areas of an image. For instance, darken the sky, highlight a subject, or enhance specific colors within a composition. This level of precision ensures that your color grading complements the subject matter and brings attention to your intended focal points.
