Conquer the Concert Scene: My Essential Gear for Concert Photography

Introduction

The right gear is everything when it comes to shooting live music. My concert setup consists primarily of zoom lenses for convenience and versatility. Whenever I photograph an artist’s set, I aim to capture a collection of unique images, and the most effective way I’ve found to accomplish this is by having various focal lengths at my disposal. Your photography goals may differ from mine, so keep that in mind if you’re planning to upgrade or purchase new gear. That being said—let’s dive deep into my essential concert photography gear.

1. Sony A7iii Camera

The Sony A7iii’s low-light capabilities, extreme ISO range, and impeccable autofocus ensure you never miss a beat, even in the dimmest of concert venues. Its full-frame 24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor, teamed with the BIONZ X image processor, allows high-resolution images at a modest price point.

2. Think Tank Shape Shifter 15 V2.0 Camera Backpack

Whether it's concerts or music festivals, this camera bag's compact and flexible design is an absolute lifesaver. The pack features designated tablet, laptop, and smartphone pockets, a roller handle pass-through sleeve, a removable water bottle pouch, a seam-sealed rain cover, and tripod attachment straps. Its organization compartments ensure quick access and hold your gear securely. The pack is constructed with a durable water-repellent (DWR) coating for strength, durability, and weather protection. The Shape Shifter 15 V2.0 is a master of versatility, allowing you to carry your gear comfortably, and it even compresses to save space when your equipment load lightens.

3. Godox V1 Flash for Sony

The Godox V1 Flash features a rounded adjustable bounce and swivel head, and is quick to recycle and recharge. Its powerful output and soft, even lighting add depth and character to your subjects, which makes it my go-to flash for on-site artist portraits.

4. Fstoppers Flash Disc Portable Speedlight Softbox

The Fstoppers Flash Disk Portable Speedlight Softbox is the perfect tool for softening and diffusing light for most DSLR camera-mounted flashes. Its portable design creates directional light that is perfect for situations when a large softbox is impractical or obtrusive. The Flash Disk allows you to create professional, studio-like portraits even in challenging or unfavorable lighting conditions.

5. Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E

This ultra-wide-angle lens is a concert photographer’s dream and is my favorite lens when shooting behind the drum kit. Its remarkable wide aperture and focal range allow you to capture immersive shots that bring the audience into the scene. It’s perfect for shooting expansive stage views and dramatic crowd shots while maintaining sharpness and minimal distortion. Its f/2.8 aperture ensures speed and excellent performance, especially in low light.

6. Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for Sony E

Next up is the Sigma 24-70mm. I’ve deemed this lens “The G Master Killer” due to its sharpness, clarity, speed, versatility, and competitive price point. Its f/2.8 aperture lets in plenty of light, and its zoom range covers a variety of compositions. Whether photographing musicians up close or taking wider shots of the stage, this lens delivers consistently sharp results every time.

7. Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM Sports Lens

Long-range shots are a breeze with the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 Sports Lens. It lets you capture close-ups from a distance and excels in low-light conditions. Its impressive telephoto reach and f/2.8 aperture beautifully isolates your subject from the surroundings while maintaining pristine image quality. Weighing nearly 8 lbs, this lens is heavy but so fun to use. It’s built like a tank and is weather-sealed against dust and moisture. The Auto Focus speed is VERY fast, even when using an adapter such as the Sigma MC-11.

*Note: At this time, Sigma has discontinued this lens. It’s highly sought after by wildlife, sports, and concert photographers for its performance and image quality, so if you see a used one online in good condition, buy it! You won’t be disappointed.
